The dark bay colt went off as the sixth favorite at 12-1 odds after running to second-place finishes in the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby over the last two months.
“I knew he was training well but I’m really surprised,’' Baffert said in a post-race interview on NBC. “I cannot believe he won this race. That little horse, that was all him. It was all guts. I’m the luckiest guy in the world.’'
The Kentucky Derby returned to the first Saturday in May after getting postponed and then moving from its traditional date to Labor Day weekend because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Kentucky Derby was down by about 100,000 fans from its normal capacity, but Churchill Downs still welcomed a 51,838 fans for the two-minute race.
The middle leg of the Triple Crown will be run May 15, when Medina Spirit likely runs in the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Md. The Belmont Stakes is set for June 5 in Elmont, N.Y.
